Now, beyond the dreamy travel brochure version of Acapulco, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before you pack your bags. On the bright side, the city is geared up for tourism, tons of things to do and service that’s usually on point. But it’s also true that safety has become a bit of a concern in recent years. It’s not about being scared off, just being smart. Acapulco may not be the glamorous playground it once was, but if you follow a few basic tips, you can absolutely have a great time here.

Acapulco’s current situation
In October 2023, Hurricane Otis, a category 5 storm, devastated the state of Guerrero, where Acapulco is located. The hurricane left dozens of people dead and injured. Little by little, the tourism scene has been recovering, but there is still a lot left to rebuild.

Is It safe to travel to Acapulco?
Acapulco has had security issues in recent years, but that doesn’t mean it’s a dangerous destination for tourists.
If you take basic precautions, you can enjoy Acapulco without any problems:

✅ Don’t go out alone at night in unfamiliar places
✅ Use safe transportation like official taxis or Uber
✅ Be discreet and don’t show off valuables in public
✅ Party safe. Don’t go looking for drama
✅ If you rent a scooter or quad, don’t drink! It may sound obvious, but people still do it.
Acapulco is still an amazing place with a huge range of tourist offerings and very friendly people. It’s not dangerous, but it’s no longer the luxury destination it once was. Still, with the right precautions, you can enjoy it without any issues.
