For me, one of the most special is swimming in a cenote, those natural, crystal-clear swimming holes the Mayans considered sacred. Some, like Gran Cenote or Cenote Ik Kil, have wooden platforms and staircases carved into the stone. The whole place feels mystical and very romantic.
You can also take a sunset catamaran cruise. You sail the Caribbean with a glass of champagne in hand while the sun turns the sky orange and pink. If you’re a bit more adventurous, you can swim with turtles in Akumal, go diving in Cozumel, or even do something as once-in-a-lifetime as swimming with whale sharks (between June and September).
Mayan ruins and ancient culture
If you two love history and culture, the Riviera Maya has some of Mexico’s most impressive archaeological sites. Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a must. Some couples come out of months of stressful wedding planning and just want to forget about the world and enjoy themselves. For them, an all-inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya is the best choice. At these luxury hotels, the only decisions you have to make are pool or beach, couples’ massage or romantic dinner with an ocean view.
These resorts are built so you never have to leave the property. They have everything: specialty restaurants, nightly shows, incredible spas, and even private pools in some rooms. Most of them also offer exclusive honeymoon packages with perks like decorated rooms, private dinners, and beach photo shoots.
Picking the right hotel is key on this kind of trip:
- If you want quiet time together, an adults-only hotel is your best bet. You’ll skip the noise of families with kids.
- Check the resort’s dining options too. Some have a lot more variety than others, and nobody wants to end up eating the same thing every day.
- The Riviera Maya has hotel chains from all over the world. It sounds like a small detail, but staying with a chain from your home country can be a plus, since the standards and the food will feel more familiar.
Even if the plan is to relax at the resort, I’d always plan at least one special excursion. A visit to Chichén Itzá is almost mandatory. It’s a world wonder, and it will leave you speechless. You could also spend a day at Xcaret, an eco-archaeological park with cultural shows, underground rivers, and even a reenactment of a Mayan wedding. For something more exclusive, the Cirque du Soleil show at Vidanta can be a magical night.
DIY honeymoon: The option for adventurous couples
If you can’t picture a whole week without heading out to explore, renting a car and road-tripping through the Riviera Maya and Yucatán on your own is a great alternative. Traveling this way, you find places you’d never see otherwise: hidden cenotes, charming little towns, and beaches far from the tourist crowds.
This kind of trip takes a bit more planning, but you get a lot of freedom in return. You decide on the fly how long to stay in each place, change your route if something interesting comes up, and experience the region in a more authentic way. That said, there are a few things to keep in mind.
First, don’t try to do too much. It’s tempting to hit every spot, but you’re better off enjoying a few places properly than spending the whole trip on the road. A good pace is to move every two or three days, without too many hours of driving between stops. And avoid driving at night. The main highways are in good shape, but many run through areas with no cell service and no streetlights. That’s when the drive gets tricky.
Some must-visit spots for a DIY honeymoon are Tulum, with its seaside ruins and bohemian vibe; Bacalar, with its stunning Lagoon of Seven Colors; and Holbox, a paradise island with sandy streets and a laid-back pace. You also can’t skip the region’s cenotes. Some of the most spectacular are Cenote Suytun, with its iconic stone platform, and Gran Cenote, which is perfect for swimming among stalactites.
On this kind of trip, the hotel matters less than it does with an all-inclusive, since you’ll spend most of your time out exploring. Your best bet is boutique hotels or charming cabins in each destination, small places that add to the adventure. Just make sure every hotel you book has air conditioning!
The middle ground: A little relaxation, a little adventure
If neither of those sounds quite right, there’s a third option a lot of couples go for: a few days of total relaxation at an all-inclusive resort, then a few days of adventure exploring the region.
You get the best of both worlds. One possible itinerary is to spend the first four or five days at a luxury resort, enjoying the beach and recharging, and then rent a car to explore other destinations for the rest of the honeymoon. That way you have time to relax and be pampered. You also get the thrill of discovering the Riviera Maya on your own terms.
Romantic experiences to enjoy as a couple
Whatever kind of honeymoon you choose, there are a few experiences in the Riviera Maya no couple should miss. A dinner on the beach, with candles and your feet in the sand, is one of them. Many hotels offer it, but there are also private restaurants that can set it up. Another is swimming in a cenote almost by yourselves. The famous ones get crowded, but if you go early in the morning or find a lesser-known spot, that time together is pure magic.
For something even more special, a sunset catamaran cruise is spectacular. Sailing the Caribbean as the sun goes down is one of those things that stays with you. And for the truly adventurous, if you visit between June and September, you can swim with whale sharks, the gentle giants of the ocean.
