Over the last couple of decades, Playa del Carmen went from a quiet fishing village to one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations. Its location, right between Cancún and Tulum, makes it a strategic base for exploring the whole Riviera Maya. It attracts every kind of traveler here, from backpackers to luxury travelers.

If you’re someone who prefers a more Westernized style of tourism and likes having every kind of activity and service within reach, this is, without a doubt, your destination.

How to get to Playa del Carmen

The closest airport is Cancún (CUN), about 45 to 50 minutes away by car. From there, you can get to Playa del Carmen a few different ways, depending on your travel style and budget.

By ADO bus: a cheap, safe option with air conditioning. The buses drop you off right in downtown Playa del Carmen.

By private transport or taxi: ideal if you want to head straight to your hotel without hauling your luggage around.

Renting a car: perfect for those who like moving at their own pace, making impromptu stops, and discovering spots like hidden cenotes, Maya ruins, or beaches with barely anyone around.

If you’re traveling light, the ADO bus is great: you hop on, get comfortable, and that’s it. But if you’re bringing several suitcases, trust me, an Uber or taxi will save you some headaches. And if you’re traveling with friends or family, or your plan involves covering a lot of ground, a rental car will give you the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want.

Best time to visit Playa del Carmen

The best time to travel to Playa del Carmen runs from November to April. These are months of dry weather, clear skies, and temperatures that make walking the beach without melting actually possible. Between May and August, on the other hand, the heat really kicks in, and you might get caught by some quick rain showers, the kind that cool things down but force you to find shelter for a bit.

Between June and October there’s a risk of hurricanes, though this is also when prices drop and there are fewer people around. I know people who took the chance and visited Playa del Carmen during this season without any issues, while others couldn’t leave their room because of the weather.

I went during shoulder season, and even though there was a fair amount of activity, I was able to enjoy beaches like Punta Esmeralda or Xpu-Ha without too many people, especially on weekdays.

Where to stay in Playa del Carmen

The hotel scene in Playa del Carmen is huge. You’ll find options for every taste, and it all comes down to the kind of experience you’re after. Broadly speaking, these are the main areas to know.

• Downtown / Fifth Avenue: Staying here puts everything within reach, though it can get a bit noisy at night.
• Playacar: A more exclusive area, perfect for families or anyone looking to relax.
• North Zone (from Calle 38 onward): Ideal if you want to be near downtown without getting caught up in the chaos.
• Nearby resorts: All along the coast, on both sides of Playa del Carmen, you’ll find plenty of resorts. They usually have everything you need so you never have to leave. Some are close enough to Playa del Carmen that you can still make a quick trip into town.

On my last visit to Playa del Carmen, I stayed near Fifth Avenue, which was great for getting around on foot, heading out for dinner, and getting back without any hassle. That said, I’ll admit that if you’re after peace and quiet, it’s not the best pick. Fifth Avenue might not be the right fit if you want something more authentic or laid-back. It’s built for mass tourism, and you can feel it on every corner. Whenever I’m there, I always feel like it’s missing that local touch you find in nearby destinations like Tulum.

The best beaches in Playa del Carmen

When people picture Playa del Carmen, that turquoise sea and fine sand that softly crunches underfoot almost always come to mind, very much in the style of the Mexican Caribbean. The beaches are one of the main reasons to come here. But it has to be said: they’re not all the same, and they don’t all give off the same energy. Some are packed with people and music, while others are quiet corners that feel like well-kept secrets.

Mamitas Beach

This is, without a doubt, the most famous beach in Playa del Carmen. It’s just steps from downtown and always has a lively atmosphere: music playing, beach clubs, loungers, and cocktails served right to you without having to get up. Perfect if you’re into a lively scene or traveling with friends looking for an upbeat beach day. Just be ready to share it with a lot of people, especially on weekends and during high season.

Punta Esmeralda Beach

This beach is ideal if you’re after something more local and less chaotic. It’s north of Playa del Carmen and mostly frequented by families and locals from the area. Its charm comes from a small cenote that flows straight into the sea, creating a current where fresh water mixes with salt water. It’s perfect for kids to play safely, or for anyone who enjoys a dip in water that’s a bit cooler than the rest of the beach.

Xpu-Ha Beach

Located about 20 to 25 minutes south of Playa del Carmen, this beach is a real hidden treasure. There’s a small entrance fee (around 60 Mexican pesos), but it’s well worth it. The beach is long, with soft white sand, and the sea tends to be very calm, ideal for swimming or snorkeling near the rocks.

Xpu-Ha is perfect for escaping the crowds. It doesn’t have the hustle of the downtown beaches, which makes it a great spot to relax, read a book, or just disconnect from everything for a while. Some beachfront restaurants let you in for free if you order food from them.

Playacar Beach

This beach sits within a private residential area south of the pier. If you’re not staying there, you’ll need to enter through one of the public access points, but it’s worth the effort. The beach is wide, very clean, and has a more exclusive feel. It doesn’t tend to get too crowded, which makes it perfect for a long walk or enjoying calmer waters.

If relaxing is more your thing than partying, this area is a great alternative for spending the day away from the crowds.

88 Beach

Certified with a Blue Flag, this beach sits between Punta Esmeralda and Playa 72. It’s one of the few with lifeguards, public restrooms, and accessibility for people with disabilities. There are also no street vendors or beach clubs, which makes it perfect for families or anyone looking for something more relaxed and clean.

Fifth Avenue, the heart of Playa del Carmen

Fifth Avenue, or simply “La Quinta,” is the epicenter of Playa del Carmen. It’s a long pedestrian street running parallel to the sea, bringing together everything that defines this city: life, color, movement, flavors, smells, music. This is where the cosmopolitan vibe of the destination really comes through.

During the day, you can wander it at a relaxed pace and discover craft shops, clothing boutiques, art galleries, jewelry stores, souvenir shops, and even luxury brands. At night, the avenue transforms: the lights come on, restaurants set up their menus outside, and live music starts up, ranging from mariachi bands to DJs on rooftop terraces facing the sea.

Strolling here is pretty much a must. There are tons of food options, from tacos to international cuisine, and shops selling everything from crafts to luxury brands. Just don’t expect low prices in this area, since it’s heavily geared toward tourism.

There are also plenty of tour agencies, pharmacies, spas, ice cream shops, and piercing and tattoo parlors. Everything in one walk.

What to do on Fifth Avenue?

There’s always something to see on Fifth Avenue, and among all the shops and restaurants, a few spots are really worth checking out:

Los Fundadores Park
Impossible to miss. Its huge Maya arch frames the sea in a spectacular way. There’s always a lot going on there, from street musicians to the Papantla flying dancers spinning through the air.

Frida Kahlo Museum
Even though it doesn’t hold original pieces, the place is well put together and immerses you in Frida’s story and rebellious spirit. It’s not huge, so you can take your time going through it. If you go, I’d recommend heading up to the rooftop, the views from up there are well worth it.

Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church
Small, white, and bright. Amid all the noise, this chapel feels like a breath of fresh air. Sometimes just stepping inside for a few minutes is enough to disconnect from the bustle of the avenue.

Dining options in Playa del Carmen

One of the tastiest ways to get to know Playa del Carmen is, without a doubt, through its food. The dining scene here is huge: you can start the day with tacos from a street stall and end it having dinner at a chef-driven restaurant with an ocean-view terrace.

The city’s international vibe means that, on a single walk, you can find everything from cochinita pibil that tastes like tradition, to a good plate of sushi, a steaming bowl of ramen, fresh Italian pasta, or freshly baked Argentine empanadas.

Here, food is a full experience. It almost always comes in generous portions, with super fresh ingredients and an unhurried pace. All while the salty sea breeze drifts between the tables and the sound of the waves mixes with conversations around you.

What to eat in Playa del Carmen?

If you want to try something truly local, don’t miss these dishes:

• Cochinita pibil: pork marinated in achiote and slow-cooked underground. A Yucatán state tradition, and without a doubt my favorite dish in all of Mexico.
• Panuchos and salbutes: snacks made from fried corn tortillas topped with beans, lettuce, onion, and shredded meat.
• Fish or shrimp tacos: found all over local stands and always a safe bet.
• Fresh seafood: ceviches, aguachiles, and grilled octopus, often served at beachfront restaurants.

Where to eat in Playa del Carmen?

Here are a few recommendations for places that combine good food with a great experience:

• El Fogón: ideal for tacos and charcoal-grilled meats. Very popular with both tourists and locals. It’s always packed, so try to avoid peak hours.
• Don Sirloin: another classic for tacos, especially sirloin and al pastor.
• Trattoria Romana: if you’re craving authentic Italian food, this hidden gem is the spot.
• Zitla: for a relaxed vibe, with fusion dishes and a great atmosphere.
• Bio & Natural: a great choice for those looking for vegetarian, vegan, or healthy options.

And of course, on Fifth Avenue itself there’s a huge selection of restaurants for every taste. Just keep in mind that prices can be noticeably higher than just a few blocks away.

Recommended activities and excursions

One of Playa del Carmen’s biggest draws is its strategic location, ideal for heading out to other fascinating spots in the Riviera Maya. From hidden beaches to archaeological sites and world-famous eco-parks, there’s so much to do it’s impossible to get bored.

Within Playa del Carmen itself, you’ll find plenty of activities, like getting your diving certification (PADI), doing yoga by the sea, going for a bike ride, visiting art galleries, or enjoying a traditional Maya spa.

Plus, being so close to Cancún, Tulum, and Cozumel makes Playa del Carmen the perfect base for planning all kinds of getaways, whether cultural, natural, or adventure-focused. Here are a few:

• Trip to Cozumel: Ferries leave every day from the Playa del Carmen pier headed to Cozumel, an island that seems made for snorkeling and diving thanks to waters so clear you can see the bottom like it’s a fish tank. The crossing takes 35 to 45 minutes, and you have several companies to choose from, like Ultramar or Winjet. Give yourself plenty of time, since there’s a lot to do on the island: quiet beaches, reefs, and a relaxed vibe. In this post I go over everything you can find on this wonderful island.
• Swim in cenotes: Mexican cenotes are something you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Some are open to the sky and surrounded by vegetation, others hidden inside caves holding cool, fresh water. Swimming in one feels like stepping into another world. From Playa del Carmen there are several just 10 or 15 minutes away by car: Cenote Cristalino, Azul, Jardín del Edén, or the mysterious Cenote Chaak Tun. Each with its own charm, all equally unforgettable.
• Visit Maya ruins like Tulum (an hour away), Cobá (an hour and a half), or Chichén Itzá (two and a half hours).
• Have fun at one of the Grupo Xcaret parks: You can find info on the different parks, what they offer, and which kind of traveler they’re best suited for in this post.
• Swim with turtles: Just 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen is Akumal, the perfect place to swim with wild turtles. It’s a protected area, so you’ll need a certified guide to get in the water.

Nightlife in Playa del Carmen

If there’s one thing that defines Playa del Carmen, it’s its festive atmosphere. The city doesn’t sleep, and every night offers something different: you can sip a relaxed cocktail by the sea, listen to live music, or dance until sunrise in a club full of lights, confetti, and impressive shows.

The night often kicks off early, especially if you’re at a beach club. These spots combine loungers facing the sea, good music, fresh cocktails, and a unique vibe. Lido Beach Club, INTI Beach, and Mandarino are some of the most recommended.

On Fifth Avenue and the surrounding streets, there are plenty of bars where you can catch rock, reggae, salsa, jazz, or electronic music, like Fah Bar, Kitxen, or La Bodeguita del Medio.

If you’re after a big-night-out kind of club with a huge show, don’t miss spots like Coco Bongo, Mandala, La Vaquita, or Santito Tun Tun.

Safety and health tips

Playa del Carmen tends to be a calm and fairly safe destination, especially since it’s so used to welcoming travelers from all over. Locals are already in that rhythm of coexisting with tourists. Even so, like in any city that lives off tourism, it’s worth staying alert and taking a few precautions so nothing ruins your trip.

• Avoid walking down dark or empty streets at night, especially away from tourist areas. Downtown is pretty safe, but like anywhere, common sense goes a long way.
• Watch your personal belongings in crowded places, like Fifth Avenue or nightclubs. Don’t carry more cash than you need.
• Don’t leave valuables on the beach if you’re going for a swim. It’s best to bring a small bag with a lock or use lockers if the place offers them.
• If you rent a car, avoid leaving items in plain sight. Use secure, well-lit parking areas.
• Don’t drink tap water. Always stick to bottled water, even for brushing your teeth if you have a sensitive stomach.
• Bring biodegradable sunscreen, especially if you’re visiting cenotes, parks, or protected areas. It helps protect the marine ecosystem.
• Use insect repellent, especially if you plan on visiting jungle areas, cenotes, or Maya ruins. The mosquitoes can be pretty persistent.
• Stay well hydrated. The weather can be hot and humid, and walking under the sun is more tiring than you’d think.
• Travel with insurance that covers medical expenses in case something comes up.

As you can see, Playa del Carmen has a lot to offer. If you know how to get around, choose your activities well, and set your expectations right, chances are you’ll end up wanting to come back. Whether you’re after adventure, rest, good food, partying, or nature, this destination is a great gateway into the paradise of the Mexican Caribbean.

Both have their appeal, but they’re different enough that the choice depends heavily on what you’re looking for. One offers total comfort and non-stop entertainment; the other, a closer connection with nature in a more laid-back setting. One or the other will suit you better depending on what you want from your trip.

Cancún: total comfort, nightlife, and resorts where you can switch off completely

Cancún is the tourism capital of the Riviera Maya and home to some of the best hotels in the country. From the moment you arrive, it’s clear that everything here is designed to deliver a comfortable, hassle-free tourist experience. Wide avenues, signage in multiple languages, top-tier shopping centers, and an impressive range of hotels make it a city that runs almost entirely for tourism.

Cancún’s beaches are, without question, one of its biggest draws. The water is turquoise, the sand is white and soft. Just walking along the shore barefoot is a pleasure in itself.

That said, there’s something you can’t ignore: the crowds. Cancún is popular — very popular. So don’t expect deserted beaches or quiet moments by the sea. The number of tourists can be overwhelming, especially during high season. Finding a calm spot to lay your towel can be a challenge if you’re not staying at a resort with a private beach section.

There’s also the cost to consider. Prices are on the high side, from taxis to tourist activities. Going out for dinner outside your hotel or booking an excursion can add up quickly. Nightlife is a major draw in Cancún, with clubs, bars, and shows that run until dawn. If partying is the goal, Cancún delivers. But if you’re after something more intimate or off the beaten path, it might leave you wanting more.

The last time I visited Cancún, I stayed at a beachfront resort and, while it was comfortable and had every amenity you could think of, I felt something was missing on the authenticity front. The experience is seamless in terms of comfort: food available around the clock, organized activities, direct beach access, zero logistical worries. But that same level of organization and polish makes the experience feel less personal and more standardized. In many ways, you end up in a bubble that could just as easily be anywhere else in the tropical world.

Tulum: nature, spirituality, and a bohemian vibe

Tulum is a completely different story. You won’t find massive avenues lined with giant resorts or hotels with hundreds of rooms. The atmosphere is far more relaxed, with a strong connection to nature and a wellness-focused philosophy. The first time I arrived, I was struck by that calm in the air — the feeling of being somewhere that runs at a different pace. That said, it’s grown a lot lately, and that expansion is starting to show.

One of the things I love most about Tulum is getting around by bike. The road that connects the beach with the jungle is perfect for cycling while taking in the scenery. Yes, the distance between the town center and the hotel zone can be long, but the bike ride becomes part of the experience. Along the way you pass craft shops, cafés serving fresh juices, tucked-away galleries, and even spots for meditation or yoga. Everything has a different energy — slower, more intentional.

Accommodation has its own character here too. While there are larger hotels, what you’ll mostly find are eco-boutique hotels, many with palm-thatched roofs, boho-chic decor, and a strong sense of harmony with the surroundings. They use natural materials, promote sustainable practices, and in some cases don’t even offer air conditioning or WiFi. For some that’s a dealbreaker, but for others, it’s exactly what they need to truly unplug.

That said, Tulum isn’t cheap either. If you want to stay beachfront or eat at the most popular spots near the shore, you’ll need a decent budget. But it does have a more flexible side: staying in the town center brings prices down considerably, and there are less obvious options worth exploring. If you’re willing to move around a bit and step off the tourist trail, you can put together a much more affordable trip.

Beaches and nature: better in Cancún or Tulum?

Both Cancún’s and Tulum’s beaches are spectacular, but in very different ways. In Cancún, the beaches are wide, long, and impeccably maintained thanks to constant upkeep from the hotels. They’re perfect if you want calm water and everything you need within reach: sun loungers, cold drinks, fresh towels — all of it. The flip side is that all those amenities can take some of the charm away, especially if you prefer a more free-spirited experience.

Tulum, on the other hand, has a much wilder feel. The beaches still have a raw edge to them, though construction and development are creeping in more every year. What I love most about Tulum is how close you are to natural wonders like the cenotes and the Sian Ka’an reserve — plus the Mayan ruins overlooking the sea, which look like something out of a film. Going early in the morning, when the sun is just starting to warm the sand and everything is still quiet, is one of those experiences that stays with you.

And then there are the cenotes: swimming in that crystal-clear water surrounded by jungle is something that simply has no equivalent in Cancún.

That said, it’s not all perfect. Public beach access keeps shrinking, which takes a lot away from the experience. Many access points are now private or charge an entrance fee, which significantly limits your freedom to move around as you please. Still, if you’re willing to explore a bit, you can still find quiet corners where you can reconnect with the more authentic side of Tulum.

Getting around: where is it easier to move?

In terms of mobility, Cancún has the edge. Everything is well connected: taxis everywhere, tourist shuttles, accessible public transport, and Uber. Getting from the airport to your hotel is straightforward, and from there you can reach shopping centers, archaeological sites, or beaches without much trouble.

Tulum is much more rustic in that regard. Distances are longer and things aren’t as conveniently placed as in Cancún. A bike is a great option for getting around, especially if you want to enjoy the ride without rushing, but it’s not always practical — particularly if you have luggage or you’re heading out at night.

Taxis exist but are expensive, and public transport is quite limited. Even so, getting around Tulum — even on foot — has its own appeal. There’s something special about walking those jungle-lined roads, even if it takes more planning. Renting a car or a scooter is a great move if you want the extra freedom to explore without depending on anyone else.

Safety and urban atmosphere

When it comes to safety, both Cancún and Tulum tend to be fairly calm for travelers, as long as you don’t forget the basics. The usual stuff: avoid quiet streets at night, don’t leave valuables in plain sight, and pay attention to local advice. Common sense goes a long way here, just like anywhere else.

Cancún, being much larger and receiving thousands of visitors every day, has a more visible security presence. Police, checkpoints, and monitoring in the busiest areas are all part of the landscape. For many, that’s reassuring — though it can sometimes feel a bit heavy-handed.

Tulum has a more relaxed feel. It doesn’t have that same watched, structured quality, which for some people is part of its charm. The general atmosphere is peaceful, especially if you stick to well-known areas and don’t wander too far at night. The key is to stay aware and not let your guard down completely, without letting it get in the way of enjoying the trip.

So… Cancún or Tulum?

Is Tulum a good alternative to Cancún? Absolutely — but only if you’re looking for something different. Each destination offers its own way of experiencing a vacation. Cancún is for those who want total comfort, with everything they need within easy reach. Tulum is for those after a quieter, more laid-back experience with a real connection to nature.

Some people love Cancún’s flawless infrastructure, the convenience of having everything at hand, and not having to worry about a thing. Others prefer the simplicity, the authenticity, the distinct energy Tulum has when you wake up surrounded by jungle or stumble onto a hidden cenote. Personally, I love cycling those green roads, jumping into an ice-cold cenote, and listening to nature wake up alongside me. But I also get why someone would rather be at an all-inclusive with a cocktail in hand from 10 in the morning.

The good news is you don’t have to pick just one: they’re close enough that, with a bit of planning, you can easily enjoy both and get the best of each world.

Exploring a cenote means diving into a world where nature and history come together in a way that’s hard to put into words. Each one has something different going for it: some are perfect for snorkeling, others for diving, and some are just great for switching off and soaking up a landscape you won’t find anywhere else.

After visiting different cenotes over the years, one thing is clear to me: being famous doesn’t mean being the best. All the cenotes on this list are beautiful, but many have been heavily developed for tourism, which takes a lot of their charm away. Personally, I prefer looking for lesser-known spots with fewer crowds, but that’s just a matter of taste. Either way, here are the 7 most famous cenotes in the Riviera Maya.

What these cenotes have in common

Each of these cenotes has its own personality, but they do share some things worth knowing before you visit:

• They get crowded, some of them seriously crowded. Check what time they’re least busy and try to go then.
• There’s an entrance fee, and most places don’t take cards. Bring cash.
• Many have no lockers, so travel light and keep an eye on your stuff.
• Snorkeling is possible at many of them, and while some rent gear, the quality isn’t always great. If you can, bring your own.
• These are natural spaces that deserve to be protected. Be respectful so they stay that way.

Our cenote picks:

Cenote Dos Ojos

If I had to describe Cenote Dos Ojos in one word, it would be hypnotic. This cenote is famous for its incredible network of underwater caves and its crystal-clear blue water that looks like it belongs on another planet.

It’s called “Dos Ojos” (Two Eyes) because it has two large cavities connected by underwater tunnels. Divers absolutely love it — the caves offer spectacular visibility and a play of light underwater that really does leave you speechless.

The water is a shade of blue that seems otherworldly, and the rock formations will genuinely blow your mind. If you’re into diving, the visibility and the way light moves under the water is something else.

Even if you don’t dive, snorkeling here is well worth it — you can float on the surface and peer down into the underwater caverns below you. It’s located near Tulum and the entrance fee is around 400 MXN. If you go, try to visit in the afternoon to avoid the morning crowds.

Gran Cenote

Just 4 km from Tulum, Gran Cenote is a natural gem. It’s a semi-open cenote, with open-air sections and tunnels that connect different parts of the underground system. The mix of open sky and cave gives it a really special atmosphere.

The water is so clear you can see every detail on the bottom, including fish and turtles swimming around like they own the place.

For those who want more adventure, diving through the underwater tunnels is an experience you won’t forget. But if you just want to relax, there are shallow areas where you can float around and enjoy the scenery.

It’s very close to the Tulum ruins, so you can easily combine both visits in one day. Entrance is around 500 MXN. Go early — around 8 AM — to beat the crowds.

Cenote Ik Kil

This one is among the most striking, and it sits very close to Chichen Itza. It’s a massive natural pit surrounded by lush vegetation, with vines hanging down from above and deep blue water below.

The water is a gorgeous turquoise blue, crystal clear and very deep. Swimming in it is genuinely enjoyable.

That said, its fame has turned it into quite a tourist operation, with restaurants and shops surrounding the area, which kills some of the magic. Entrance is around 200 MXN and includes a life jacket. To enjoy it without too many people around, get there early — it gets overwhelming later in the day.

Cenote Suytun

If any cenote has taken over Instagram, it’s Cenote Suytun. This striking enclosed cenote is known for its circular stone platform extending out over the water, and for the beam of light that streams in through the opening in the ceiling, lighting up the center like a natural stage.

Located near Valladolid, this was a sacred site for the ancient Maya, who believed these bodies of water were portals to the underworld. The water is deep and noticeably colder than at other cenotes.

The water is a beautiful turquoise blue, and the stone platform stretching out over it adds a magical touch. If you’re into photography, you’ll love the shots you can get here — especially when the light filters through the ceiling opening.

The downside is that it gets very crowded, especially between 11:30 and 13:00 when the sun is high and creates that famous light beam. Entrance is around 120 MXN and includes a life jacket, which is mandatory here.

If you’re looking for an open cenote surrounded by vegetation with different depth levels, Cenote Azul is the one. Located near Playa del Carmen, it works for all ages and swimming abilities.

What makes it special is that it has several sections, from shallow areas great for kids to deeper spots where you can snorkel. The water clarity is impressive — you can see the rocks on the bottom and even your own silhouette as you swim.

The vibe here is very family-friendly, but adults will enjoy it too — snorkeling, or jumping from the diving platform about 4 meters up. It’s a cenote you can easily spend the whole day at, though I’d recommend arriving early to secure a good spot, since there are no lockers. Entrance is around 120 MXN.

Cenote Zacil-Ha

This is a small, open cenote just a few minutes from Tulum. Its name means “clear water” in Maya, which tells you exactly what to expect — turquoise, incredibly transparent water.

Unlike some of the deeper or darker cenotes, Zacil-Ha has an average depth of around 3 meters, making it a great option for anyone who’s not comfortable swimming where they can’t see the bottom.

It’s one of the quieter ones on this list, so the atmosphere is much more relaxed. It also has a zip line over the water and two artificial pools for extra fun. Entrance is around 80 MXN, though the zip line costs extra. There’s a restaurant, bathrooms, and changing rooms, so it’s a comfortable spot to spend the day.

Casa Cenote

This one is completely different from the rest. Instead of being inside a cave or a open pit, Casa Cenote is shaped like a river and surrounded by mangroves.

It’s located near Tulum and is known for its mix of fresh and salt water, since it connects with the sea through underground tunnels.

It’s great for snorkeling — visibility is excellent and you can spot fish, crabs, and even manatees during certain seasons. You can also explore it by kayak or paddleboard, which makes it unlike anything else on this list.

It’s far less visited than the others, which gives it a much more authentic feel. Entrance is around 150 MXN. If you go, don’t forget biodegradable mosquito repellent — being in a mangrove area, you’ll run into plenty of them.

As you can see, cenotes come in all shapes and forms, so you really can’t say “seen one, seen them all.” It’s a one-of-a-kind way to experience nature that you can only do in this part of Mexico — so make sure you fit at least one cenote visit into your itinerary when you’re in the area.

And of course, exploring the region’s cenotes is an unforgettable experience. Some of the most spectacular are Cenote Suytun, with its iconic stone platform, and Gran Cenote, which is perfect for swimming among stalactites.

On this type of trip, the hotel isn’t as central to the experience as it is with an all-inclusive. It’s best to opt for boutique hotels or charming cabins in each destination to complement the adventure. Just make sure all your hotels have air conditioning!

First, it’s important to understand that when we talk about Tulum, we can refer two different things: the ancient Mayan ruins and the modern town.

The Tulum ruins may not have the gigantic pyramids of other Mayan archaeological sites, but their stunning location overlooking the sea sets them apart. They are also so close to the town of Tulum that getting there on your own is easy, with no need for an organized tour. You can simply rent a car, or grab a taxi or an Uber.

A great tip for visiting the ruins is to add a boat tour to your ticket. This allows you to see the ruins from the water and even snorkel with manta rays. It’s an affordable activity and a perfect way to cool off after exploring the archaeological site. From the boat, you can also see the small, secluded beach below the ruins and enjoy the Caribbean at its best. Even though the area can get crowded, especially for snorkeling, it’s an experience you won’t forget.

The town of Tulum, on the other hand, has changed dramatically in recent years. It began as an off-the-beaten-path destination for travelers looking to escape the crowds of Cancun. In its early days, Tulum had an exclusive, bohemian feel, where artists and celebrities came to enjoy the tranquility of the Riviera Maya. Over time, however, it has become one of Mexico’s top destinations, bringing both progress and problems.

While the town now boasts a huge selection of hotels, restaurants, and activities, its infrastructure hasn’t quite kept pace with the tourist boom, leading to traffic and congestion in some areas. Still, with a bit of planning, it remains an incredible place to visit.

For a more affordable and flexible option, staying in Tulum town is an excellent choice. Here, you’ll find everything from budget-friendly hostels to modern apartments with pools. On my last visit, I rented a three-person apartment with an infinity pool and a private dipping pool for just $70 USD a night. It´s a perfect option for those who want comfort without breaking the bank.

You can also find a middle ground with boutique hotels, eco-lodges, and cabins in the hotel zone that blend a natural setting with a more laid-back vibe. These accommodations often focus on sustainability and offer a unique experience compared to the large resorts.

Whatever you choose, the most important thing is to book well in advance, especially during high season when prices soar and availability disappears quickly.

If you can, add a boat tour to your visit. The view of the ruins from the sea is even more impressive, and the trip often includes snorkeling with manta rays for an extra dash of adventure.

After exploring the site, you can head down to the small beach just below the ruins for a refreshing swim in the Caribbean. It’s a fantastic experience, and even when it’s busy, it’s well worth the effort.

While many hotels and beach clubs work tirelessly to clean their beachfronts, it’s not always possible to keep them completely clear. To best handle this, you should:

• Check sargassum reports before your trip, as conditions change seasonally.
• Have backup plans to visit cenotes and lagoons if the beaches are affected.
• Consider visiting beaches that tend to be cleaner, like those in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

When the beaches are clear, Tulum remains a spectacular destination with some of the most beautiful views in the Mexican Caribbean.

Tulum is a captivating destination, but knowing its pros and cons is key to having the best possible experience. If you’re looking for a mix of history, stunning beaches, and a laid-back vibe, this is the place for you. Where is Holbox Island and how do you get there?

Holbox is in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, inside the Yum Balam nature reserve. Since it’s separated from the mainland by the Yalahau Lagoon so the only practical way to get there is by ferry. (I guess you could arrive by private flight, but that’s not an option I’ve ever seriously considered.)

Chiquilá is the main gateway to the island. From there, a ferry ride of about 20 minutes takes you to Holbox. You can reach Chiquilá by car, bus, or private transport. The drive from Cancún takes around 2 hours; from Playa del Carmen or Tulum, it’s usually between 2.5 and 3.5 hours.

Important tip: In high season, ferries can be packed. Plan ahead and arrive early.

Holbox: a charming little town

Holbox isn’t just about beautiful beaches, it also has a town full of personality. Walking its sandy streets, with no pavement and no cars, makes you feel like time slows down. Life here moves calmly, and locals are warm and friendly, often happy to share the island’s stories and culture.

Sandy streets and golf carts

One of Holbox’s most distinctive features is that there are no cars, which gives it a genuine, different feel from other destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. The main ways to get around are golf carts and bicycles, which makes exploring the island feel especially picturesque.

At first, it can feel strange to see unpaved streets in such a famous destination but that’s part of Holbox’s charm. No traffic lights, no engine noise, no rush. That said, no cars doesn’t mean no traffic: in high season, the island can be flooded with golf carts to the point where it becomes annoying.

Colorful murals: art on every corner

One of the most surprising things about Holbox is its street art. The town is full of vibrant murals that represent Mayan culture, local wildlife, and the island spirit. Walking around feels like an open-air gallery, where every corner has a story to tell.

Some of the most impressive murals are near the center on restaurants, hotels, and local shops. You don’t need a specific route; just wander and you’ll find art everywhere. One of my favorites is a huge whale shark painted on a hotel facade, it almost looks alive when the sunlight hits it.

Markets, shops, and local food

The heart of Holbox is its small downtown area, where you’ll find artisan markets, little local shops, and plenty of restaurants serving fresh, delicious food.

Bars and restaurants in Holbox have a bohemian, relaxed atmosphere, with something for everyone: from taco stands to gourmet seafood spots.

A relaxed nightlife with plenty of charm

Unlike other Riviera Maya destinations, Holbox isn’t about big parties or nightclubs. Nightlife here is calmer: beach bars where you can drink a cocktail with ocean views, or live music under a starry sky.

Some great ways to enjoy the night in Holbox:

• Live-music bars: Perfect for reggae, traditional folk, or Caribbean sounds.
• Sky bars with ocean views: For cocktails on a rooftop with panoramic views.
• Bioluminescent nights: A nighttime beach walk to see the bioluminescence is unforgettable. You don’t even need a tour, just take a walk along the beach after dinner.

The best beaches in Holbox

If there’s one thing that makes Holbox truly special, it’s the beauty of its beaches. Shallow waters, white sand, and incredible scenery make the whole island feel like a postcard.

Holbox Beach: the most accessible and lively

This is the island’s main beach, closest to town and where most tourist activity is concentrated. You’ll find beach bars, hammocks in the water, and lots of places to relax while enjoying the sea breeze. Holbox Beach has plenty of atmosphere, but in high season it can get crowded. It’s ideal if you want comfort and a bit of buzz nearby, though if you’re looking for peace and quiet, there are better options.

Punta Mosquito: Holbox’s hidden gem

Punta Mosquito is one of the most magical places on the island. This sandbank stretches out into the sea, creating a shallow-water beach where you can walk for ages without the water reaching your knees. And if you’re lucky, you might spot pink flamingos in their natural habitat.

You can get there by walking from Holbox Beach in about 40 minutes, or by renting a golf cart to the closest access point.

Punta Cocos Beach: the best sunset spot

If you want a quieter beach, Punta Cocos is the best choice. Located at the western end of the island, it’s perfect for escaping the crowds and watching an incredible sunset. It’s usually much less busy than other areas and feels far more relaxed. Ideal for ending the day with an unforgettable view.

Unmissable things to do in Holbox

Beyond relaxing on the beach, Holbox offers plenty for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and photographers. Here are some of the best experiences you can have:

Bioluminescence

After dark, the sea around Holbox can light up with tiny sparkling flashes caused by microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates. It’s a natural phenomenon that feels otherworldly. Personally, it makes me feel like I’m in Avatar.

To see it, you can join a kayak tour or simply walk to the shoreline on a moonless night. If you can, experience it both ways.

Swim with the whale shark (June–September)

Holbox is one of the few places in the world where you can swim with whale sharks, the largest fish on the planet. These gentle giants are completely harmless, and it’s one of the most mind-blowing experiences you can have.

They can be spotted from June to September, and there are specialized tours that take you out to sea to swim alongside them.

Kayaking through the mangroves

Exploring Holbox’s mangroves by kayak is an amazing way to see the island’s biodiversity. You might spot flamingos, pelicans, herons, and even crocodiles in their natural habitat. To truly enjoy it, go at sunrise when wildlife is most active and the light is perfect for taking great photos.

Explore the island by bike or golf cart

One of the most fun ways to discover Holbox is by renting a bicycle or golf cart and cruising its sandy streets. It’s a great way to reach more remote areas like Punta Mosquito or Punta Cocos Beach. Just keep in mind that in high season, when the island gets overcrowded, it loses some of its charm.

Hunt for murals around town

As mentioned earlier, Holbox is full of impressive murals. Wandering the streets and “collecting” them as you go is surprisingly fun.

Try the famous lobster pizza

One of Holbox’s signature dishes is lobster pizza, a local favorite that blends seafood flavors with an Italian twist. Roots is one of the best-known spots for it. I’m not usually into exotic combinations, but I have to admit: this pizza is a pleasant surprise. The flavor is unique and absolutely worth trying.

The other side of Holbox: mass tourism and infrastructure issues

One thing I’ve noticed in my travels around Mexico is that some places grow sustainably, while others grow uncontrollably. Unfortunately, Holbox falls into the second category and it’s starting to suffer from its own success. In high season, the island can feel overwhelmed with visitors, losing much of its charm and creating some real inconveniences.

High season in Holbox typically comes in two main periods: December to April, and July and August.

• In high season, the number of tourists can be overwhelming. People queue to take photos on the famous swings, to eat at restaurants, or even to rent a kayak.It ruins the idea of spending a few peaceful days here.
• The tourism boom has pushed accommodation prices in Holbox significantly higher than in other Riviera Maya destinations.
• Even though Holbox is often described as “traffic-free,” the reality is that in high season there are golf carts everywhere. Some people say it’s part of the charm, but I’m not completely convinced.
• Holbox’s infrastructure isn’t fully developed. Power outages and unstable internet are common, which can be a problem if you need to stay connected. This might sound like rustic charm in a remote place but when you’re surrounded by crowds, it stops being charming pretty fast.
• Tourism growth has also turned waste management into an issue. Holbox still lacks an efficient trash collection system, which becomes especially noticeable in high season.

I’m not saying all this to discourage anyone from visiting Holbox Island, just to give you a more realistic picture. Holbox is a true paradise when it’s not packed, but if you’re hoping to relax somewhere remote, I wouldn’t recommend traveling in high season. There are much quieter destinations, like El Cuyo.

Tips to enjoy Holbox

Most of these are obvious based on everything above, but here’s a quick recap:

• Avoid high season if you want to experience Holbox the way it should be experienced.
• Book accommodation and tours in advance to avoid inflated prices, especially in high season.
• Explore beyond the typical tourist spots to find quieter corners.
• Bring a good mosquito repellent, you’ll need it.
• Be patient and open-minded. Holbox has its own rhythm. Slow down and enjoy it.
• Keep expectations realistic. Nothing is more disappointing than idealizing a place and then finding something completely different.

All in all, Holbox is still a Caribbean paradise with unique experiences you won’t find anywhere else. It’s perfect for disconnecting, enjoying nature, and creating unforgettable memories. You just need to be smart about when you go.

Story and plot of Joyá

Cirque du Soleil always draws inspiration from the most unexpected places. This time, they’ve taken inspiration from the migration of the monarch butterfly to explore themes like legacy, tradition, and generational change.

What may sound a bit strange is embodied in the story of a teenager named Joyá and her alchemist grandfather in search of the secrets of life. Joyá will have to venture into a magical jungle where she will be guided by creatures that are part human and part animal.

Where Joyá is performed and how to get there

To see Cirque du Soleil JOYÀ in the Riviera Maya, you’ll need to go to the Teatro Cirque du Soleil, located inside the Vidanta Riviera Maya resort complex. It might sound a bit confusing when you read it, but it’s simple once it’s explained:

Vidanta Riviera Maya is a large complex that includes several (high-end) Vidanta hotels, a golf course, and plenty more. Within that complex, the Teatro Cirque du Soleil was built specifically to host this show. Importantly, the theater entrance is separate from the hotel entrances, so you don’t need to be staying at the resort to attend.

Vidanta Riviera Maya is located between Tulum and Cancun, very close to Puerto Morelos. It’s about a 20-minute drive from Playa del Carmen and around 45 minutes from Cancun.

You can get there by rental car, Uber, or taxi, taking the Tulum-Cancun highway. If you prefer, you can also use the buses that Cirque du Soleil provides for the show. They can be caught at Plaza La Isla (Cancun) or Playacar Center (Playa del Carmen). You can add the bus service when purchasing your tickets.

Types of tickets and duration:

The show lasts 80 minutes, with no intermission. If you opt for the experience that includes dinner before the show, the total duration will be 2 hours and 20 minutes.

There are different types of tickets:

• Show only: Includes only the ticket for the show.
• Show and champagne: Includes a bottle of champagne to enjoy during the show.
• Dinner, show, and champagne: Includes a three-course gourmet dinner before the show, the show, and a bottle of champagne.
